KENTUCKY BOARD OF LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS

FBI Criminal Background Check Instructions

Kentucky law now requires new applicants for licensure, or license renewals with Kentucky Board of Licensed Professional Counselors to undergo a criminal background check by means of a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprint check.

Please follow the steps below to obtain the required background check. The board will receive the results directly from the Kentucky State Police. Your application cannot move forward for a full review by the board until this background check has been received. It can take 5 to 10 business days from your appointment with IdentoGO for the board to receive the results.

To undergo an FBI criminal background check, complete the following steps:

1. Schedule your fingerprint appointment at uenroll.identogo.com using the board's IdentoGO service code 27GKXB.

2. Bring an identification document to your fingerprint appointment. Applicants are responsible for fees associated with this background check. Examples of acceptable identification documents are:

  • Driver's License issued by a State or outlying possession of the U.S.
  • Driver's License PERMIT issued by a State or or outlying possession of the U.S.
  • Commercial Driver's License issued by a State or or outlying possession of the U.S.
  • ID card issued by a federal, state, or local government agency or by a Territory of the U.S.
  • Enhanced Tribal Identification Card (for federally recognized U.S. tribes)
  • Uniformed Services Identification Card (Form DD-1172-2)
  • U.S. Military Identification Card
  • U.S. Passport

3. Completed fingerprints will be sent to Kentucky State Police, who will send a completed background check directly to the board.

Applicants who previously applied with all required paperwork have been pre-reviewed and will have expedited processing once the results of the background check are received.

For new applicants, please note the following important dates that can impact when an application can receive a final review.

  • The next meeting of the Kentucky Board of Licensed Professional Counselors is scheduled for October 16, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.
  • All materials must be submitted before October 6, 2026, to be reviewed at this board meeting.
  • The remaining board meetings scheduled for 2026 are November 20 and December 18.

The board may call additional special meetings to address pending applications. If the board calls a special meeting, dates and times of those meetings will be posted to LPC.ky.gov.
